This "MMA" (for Metropolitan Museum of Art) holiday brooch is labeled as 'Santa with Toys.' As is usual with MMA jewelry, it is based upon a historical piece or collection of art. In this case, the pin is a 3D brooch replica of a Santa on a 1843 Christmas card from the Burdick Collection. It represents 'Father Christmas.' This substantial brooch has wonderful details like his gold branch staff, toys stuffed in his pocket as well as the sack on his back, and well articulated facial features. This is truly precious Santa pin!
It became very popular over the succeeding decades to celebrate holidays with postcards that had seasonal drawings and photographs. Memories from my grandmother, who was born in 1901, include her collection of the holiday postcards she exchanged with close family and friends. Although this brooch does not come with its original description card, I have a read a copy of it - stating that the pin is 24k gold plate and silver plate with enamel.
Measurements: It is 2.25 inches tall by 1.25 inches wide with a slanted, vertical pin back.
Condition: The brooch is. in excellent vintage condition. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an essential part of the description.
Marks: It is stamped on the back side, "MMA" (for Metropolitan Museum of Art) with the copyright symbol.
