Large and important, this is an arrestingly beautiful ring that features an exquisite hand carved Opal atop an Onyx background. The carving depicts a koi/fish and the detail and quality of the carving is exceptional. The Opal is a lovely violet color, shading to a lighter blue. The Onyx, with the Opal atop, is bezel set in a 14K gold setting. The ring is a size 8 and the face of the ring is 1 inch long and three quarters of an inch wide. The ring is not marked but acid tests as 14K gold. It weighs 7.4g. The condition is excellent – the Opal glows with iridescent beauty. I think it likely dates midcentury –ca. 1960s. I purchased this ring at an estate of a world traveler with many fine items from abroad. I think this ring may be Australian in origin, but I cannot be sure. Truly an astonishing and unusual ring – the Koi – a symbol of good luck and fortune – is rarely seen in carved Opal. Distinctive and special. $745.00
