Hand-carved in France, circa 1850, this giltwood and caned banquette was produced in the style of Louis XV. Much like other seating from Louis XV, the banquette has carved arm supports and cabriole legs (four of them).

The seat is subtly shaped, with a slight convex bend along the center. In between the curved giltwood seat rails is a caned section that extends from one arm support to the other. The sides of the arm supports are caned as well, featuring two layers inset among curvaceous panels. Although the exterior of the arm support has been carved with only a slim molding, the interior has a Rococo scalloped shell and pair of acanthus leaves that flank the caning. The acanthus is featured along the outer edge of the bench, with a volute leaf that starts at the top of the curved arm support and trails down to the scrolled feet. This beautifully worked giltwood and caned banquette has been left “dans son jus” and can be used at the foot of a bed, in a small powder room, or in a bedroom.

CONDITION: Good antique condition with wear commensurate to age and use, including minor rubs and age separations. Acceptable losses and nicks to giltwood.
