Pair of Carved and Painted Louis XVI Style Benches from France, C. 1900 - image 1 of 15

This is a pair of carved wooden benches dating to circa 1900, originally made in France. They have a subtle, demi-lune shaped façade and have been finished in a wonderful, lightly distressed painted finish with tones of white and gray. The motifs of framed rondels, florets, and tapering fluted legs are all of the Louis XVI style, which was pervasive in France during the latter decades of the 18th century. It is interesting to note that the backs of these benches also feature thin linear moldings and framed rondels to match the front, meaning they could be left to “float” in a room. Of course, they would be perfect at the foot of beds, in an entryway, or a living room.

CONDITION: Very good condition commensurate to age and use. Rubbed painted finish and upholstery is contemporary, but the benches themselves are antique. Slight darker area to front fabric of one bench, nicks and wear to frame as seen in photos.
