Antique Victorian era celluloid photo button picturing two babies or infants. Sepia-tone. Measures approximately 6" in diameter. Includes original attached stand.
These celluloid photo buttons were often made as a mourning piece during the Victorian era, when photography was in its earlier stages and still quite expensive, reserving the act as a planned event instead of an everyday occurrence. These were often displayed during a funeral or memorial service, then staged in the family's cabinet.
Has markings and patent date stamped on back. W. Lapham & Co., Chicago, Illinois. Pin-lock Patent of May 21, 1898.
Interesting macabre piece of history!
