HALL OF FAME FLORIDA HIGHWAYMAN Artist S. M. (Sylvester) Wells (American b. 1938) - Outstanding Original Signed Oil "Storm on Rio Mar" - image 1 of 10

ORIGINAL FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN - S. M. (Sylvester) Wells (American b. 1938) - Mr. Wells has lost his sight; so sad that he has been unable to continue his art. This painting is outstanding. The sky is beautiful and foretelling of a coming storm. The place is Rio Mar - a perfectly wonderful scene for an artist to paint. Many (or most) of the Florida Highwaymen loved Rio Mar, and scenes of Rio Mar at varying times of day, in varying weather conditions, are especially attractive for any Highwaymen art collection.

Sylvester Wells paintings are exciting. His art shows the sky as more than a background; he makes it an exciting part of the artwork. Even the movement of the water, and the birds - His artwork has a style that is quite recognizable, and quite different from the other Florida Highwaymen.

Wells was born in 1938 and began painting in 1957. He sold his paintings around the Cocoa Beach, Florida, area. “We didn’t congregate,” Wells told a reporter for the Tampa Tribune. “We were just trying to put food on the table.”

Who were the Highwaymen? A group of young African-American landscape and skyscape painters, these artists painted their way out of the despair awaiting them as workers in Florida citrus groves and packing houses of the 1950s. Typically they painted on inexpensive materials such as Upson board, a roofer's material, and they sold their work out of the trunks of their cars. They were not allowed in galleries, so they sold them door-to-door and store-to-store, in restaurants, offices, courthouses, and bank lobbies. In succeeding decades, however, Highwaymen paintings were consigned to attics and garage sales. Their work was rediscovered in the mid 1990's, and today is recognized as the work of noteworthy American folk artists.
