Dollie Nabinger's works are simply wonderful. She is widely recognized and collected, with her works bringing higher and higher prices, many in the thousands of dollars. Her talent, in particular her use of shadow and shade, is appreciated. Deep color and the feeling that the artist loved what she saw and what she painted draws you to her work. Dollie Spidle Nabinger (American, 1905-1988) Born in Commerce, Texas. Her parents recognized and encouraged her talent. They enrolled her in a Catholic school that encouraged her talent. Her father even stretched her first canvases. At the time, public schools did not offer art. In later life, she credited her parents and their enthusiastic support for her success.

When she was 13 years old, J. F. McCan, an excellent established Texas artist, took her as his apprentice for about seven years. She then went to the Art Students League in New York for two years. She studied with Jose Arpa and Harry Anthony DeYoung in San Antonio, Texas. In 1955, she studied at the Academie Julian in Paris for the summer.

As her work was seen in the art world, it was exhibited throughout the U. S. A., and had a following in Europe as well.

Dollie was married to Jack E. Nabinger, who handmade and carved many of her frames. They retired in Fredericksburg Texas around 1962 where Dollie could continue to paint and Jack could follow his hobbies of photography and woodcarving.

Dollie Nabinger is listed in Fredericksburg Texas, 150 Years of Paintings and Drawings by Jack Maguire; An Encyclopedia of Women Artists of the American West, 1998, University of Texas Press, Austin; Artists of Texas, 1800-1945, Texas A&M Press, 1999; Texas Painters, Sculptors & Graphic Artists, a biographical Dictionary of Artists in Texas before 1942, Woodmont Books, 2000.
