Antique Brass Knight’s Helmet Candle Snuffer, C.1850-1880. - image 1 of 8

Antique Brass Knight’s Helmet Candle Snuffer, C.1850-1880. This handsome brass helmet is a unique Victorian candle snuffer and appropriately falls within the Renaissance Revival Period. In style, it mimics a type of snuffer used in medieval times, 13th-14th century.

In researching knight’s helmets it was discovered that the very ornate plumed comb or crest at the top is unusual and may have been used here to indicate it was made for royalty or someone of great influence. It also displays a 4-part visor with flower-head bolt covers. The helm or bowl is beautifully engraved with swirls and trimmed with scallop borders on each side. Finally, the gorget or neck guard has repousse vertical ridges and the collar area is quite ornate with scalloped edges and etched swirls. All in all, a wonderful Renaissance Revival piece for the Gentleman’s desk!

SIZE: 2 7/8” high x 1 5/8” wide at its widest point front to back; 1 ¼” base width.

CONDITION: Very Good. It does show some use wear to the engraving. There are a couple of small dents at the top of the plume. Waxy residue remains on the interior.
