Needle Case Etui Baby, Molded Hard Celluloid, C.1900-1920. This darling needle case or etui is made of hard celluloid with a lid that takes the form of a baby’s head. The interior contains a sewing kit with a spindle holding several threads with a removable cap allowing access to a space for needles. I believe the sewing kit is a replacement.
The needles case/etui base is a simple yet handsome cylinder which would have been easy to hold onto and effortless to slip into one’s pocket. The baby’s head lid however is exquisitely modeled with distinct features including 2 baby teeth! The little fellow has deep set eyes with painted irises, a cute turned-up nose, an open mouth displaying his 2 teeth, a sweet double chin and cheeks that almost invite a “pinch”. He wears a charming blue cap on his head with one side flipped up displaying his nicely modeled ear and hair. All in all, an endearing little imp and delightful piece of vintage sewing memorabilia for a beginner or experienced collector.
