18th C.Engraving Portrait of Guy Crecentius Fagon
Antique engraving of a portrait of a handsome gentleman wearing an elaborate curly wig. Below the oval portrait on the left is printed: "Hyacinthe Rigaud pinxit" and on the right is: "Édelinck sculpsit C. P. R". Printed around the portrait is: "GUIDO CRECENTIUS FAGON REGI A SANCTIORIBUS CONSILIIS ARCHIATRORUM COMES". The engraving is said to have been printed in 1702 according to sources on the web. I believe this is a French print as Mr. Fagon was French. This is guaranteed to be an original 18th c. engraving.
Gerard Edelinck (engraver) French/ Flemish, 1640 - 1707
Hyacinthe Rigaud (artist after) French, 1659 - 1743
From Wikipedia: "Guy-Crescent Fagon (11 May 1638 – 11 March 1718) was a French physician and botanist. He came from nobility and his uncle, Guy de La Brosse, had founded the Royal Gardens. Fagon was director of the gardens too."
Engraving size: 13"x approximately 9 1/2".
Sheet that it is mounted onto: 17" x 13 3/4".
Condition: The engraving has been trimmed down to what is visible as printed in the photos and glued down onto another piece of paper. There is damage to the paper it is mounted onto and there is also pencil and ink writing on this sheet. The original engraving is in good condition other than being trimmed and glued down.
